OE numbers are the universal language of auto parts. When you send a supplier the correct OE reference, you remove guesswork, cut quoting delays, and reduce the risk of receiving a mismatched part. This guide explains what OE numbers are, where to find them, and exactly what to include in an RFQ so you receive an accurate quotation on the first exchange.
What is an OE number?
An OE (Original Equipment) number is the part number assigned by the vehicle manufacturer to a specific component, such as a brake pad set, an alternator, or a control arm. Aftermarket suppliers use OE numbers as the reference point to match products with identical fitment, dimensions and performance characteristics.
Where to find OE numbers
- Vehicle service manual — parts lists in the maintenance book usually include OE references.
- On the part itself — most components have a stamped, molded or laser-marked number.
- Dealer records or parts catalogues — official catalogues list OE numbers for each model and engine code.
- VIN-based lookup — with the VIN, parts catalogues can be searched by vehicle configuration.
What to include in your RFQ
- OE number(s) — the primary reference, plus any alternative numbers you have.
- Brand references — e.g. original brand, or preferred aftermarket brands.
- Vehicle details — make, model, year, engine code, and VIN fragment if possible.
- Position — front/rear, left/right, upper/lower. Getting the side wrong is the most common quoting error.
- Quantity and target price — helps the supplier plan packaging and logistics.
- Packaging and marking — neutral or private-label packaging, language of labels.
- Destination — country, port or delivery address, and expected delivery window.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sending only a photo without an OE number — helpful, but OE references make matching instant and precise.
- Confusing left and right or upper and lower positions.
- Forgetting to mention aftermarket brand preferences when private-label branding is important.
